Crude oil effects on soil
The Toxicity of Oil: What's the Big Deal? This is part of an ongoing exploration of society's relationship with oil and the large part oil plays in all of our lives. AUGUST 27, 2012 -- Dealing with a major oil spill is a huge effort, sometimes requiring billions of dollars and involving hundreds, even thousands of people. Production has emitted greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, released produced water into water bodies and spilled crude oil on the soil. These have posed challenges to the existence of plants and animals in producing communities in many developing countries. The earth comprises two thirds water and one third soil. Oil spills affect both. Worldwide, crude oil is extracted at the rate of over 65 million barrels per day (Giovanni and Simon, 1998) and meets the bulk of world energy requirements. In Nigeria, crude oil spills account for about 35,000 barrels of crude oil on the Niger-Delta marine body (Obi, 2012). 31 Oct 2015 Oil pollution might affect soil physical properties. According to Abosede (2013), crude oil might have negative effects on some soil physical
Effects of poultry manure and cow dung on the physical and chemical properties of crude oil polluted soil. Sci. World J. 2008;3(2): 45-50. Merkl N, Schutze-Kraft R, Infante C. Assessment of tropical grasses and legumes for phytoremediation of petroleum contaminated soils. The effects of the different levels of crude oil contamination of soil ecosystems on hydrophysical parameters, vegetative growth, the dynamics of microbial degradation of the benzo[a]pyrene, and level of toxicity to organisms of the different taxonomic groups have been examined. The surface of the land, air and water can be polluted by any kind of crude oil which spill is hazardous for soil. pic showing example of oil spill MINING – Many of industrial and human activities are a cause for non-Eco-friendly mining. Adverse Health Effects from Exposure to Crude Oil Mixtures (Salt Lake City, UT) – With the recent Chevron oil spill into Red Butte Creek, it is important to remind the public of adverse health effects that can occur from exposure to crude oil mixtures. In an effort to protect the public’s health, the following precautions are recommended: Oil spills contaminate soil and water and may cause devastating explosions and fires. The federal government and industry are developing standards, regulations, and procedures to reduce the potential for accidents and spills and to clean up spills when they occur.
This study investigated the impact of crude oil pollution on different types of soils in Kuwait. For this purpose the oil trench, which consisted of diversity of soils
The changes in soil physicochemical suggested that soil integrity and quality is altered by crude oil contamination. The increased acidity with time also suggested the release of acidic metabolites in bioremediation by intrinsic microorganisms. Barua et al. (2011) concluded that the effect of crude oil spill on soil caused decrease in soil moisturere tention (hydrophobic), porosity, water holding capacity, soil pH and extractable phosphorous, whereas it increased total nitrogen, organic carbon and exchangeable potassium. 151 Effects of crude oil on some soil types of Kuwait hundreds of kilometers in the southern border zone and north eastern coastal zone of Kuwait, followed by filling them with crude oil and installation of detonation systems. During the second phase (1993-1994), the light crude oil from 81% of the oil trenches in the southern This ensured a uniform crude oil concentration in the soil samples and the oil is in first contact with dry soil solid surface. Therefore, as the oil is mixed with soil, it surrounds the soil particles, and then the water reaction with soil particle reduces. It is a fossil fuel that is extracted and used to make petroleum products. Crude oil is refined to make gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, residential fuel oil, kerosene, propane, and other sources of energy. It is also used to make waxes, ink, crayons, tires, and some cleaning and personal care products.

A study was conducted to investigate the impact of oil spillage on some properties of soils collected from Kashe and Nzarke sites in Duhok governorate, Kurdistan region of Iraq. Soil samples were taken from each site after one weak and then after three months at 0-15 cm and 15-35 cm depths with control samples approximately 500 m from outside oil spill area. the Niger Delta region of Nigeria is spilled on soil due to pipeline destruction [5]. Previous studies on crude oil. pollution in soil had revealed its adverse effects on soil productivity [6, 7].These studies had been majorly on. the effects of pollution on chemical properties of the soil. Soil water contents in oil-contaminated marshes are negatively correlated with soil temperature and are significantly lower than those in the control area, especially in fall. Crude oil contamination significantly increases the soil pH up to 8.0, and reduces available phosphorus concentrations in the soil.
