Both service contracts and warranties provide repair or maintenance for a specific time. But there's an important difference: a warranty is included in the price of an item; a service contract costs extra. It's an add-on that might not be worth the price. Some service contracts duplicate the warranty coverage that the manufacturer provides; some cover only part of the product; and some make it nearly impossible to get repairs when you need them. It all comes down to one question: Are extended warranties worth it? Here’s the honest truth. How Do Extended Warranties Work? First, let’s establish what an extended warranty is — and is not. You might be surprised to learn it’s actually not a warranty at all — a more apt description would be “service contract.” Service contracts are agreements between you and an HVAC service provider wherein you pay a set fee to guarantee the company's ongoing services for your HVAC system. With the most basic contracts, the service includes a checkup and tune-up emphasizing your heating system at the start of the winter and air conditioning system before summer. Service contracts fall into three broad categories: Contracts covering only the labor cost usually of either annual or semiannual planned maintenance visits to check, clean, and adjust equipment. Contracts covering the labor costs for planned maintenance visits and for unplanned repairs. HVAC Service Contracts: Are They Worth It? Let’s be honest, most people don’t see the need for a HVAC service contract, and truly don’t understand how they and their equipment can benefit from having one. Unfortunately, this is a prime example of how what you don’t know can hurt you. While you can wait until your AC malfunctions to Typical A/C maintenance plans cost $200 to $350 per year, with 2 planned check-ups and additional service calls as needed. Good maintenance plans guarantee your A/C system is professionally serviced according to manufacturer’s specifications and it keeps your manufacturer warranty in full force. If you do all the above and you’re still not sure if an extended warranty or appliance service contract is worth the money, then the best thing might be to wait.
